Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 20 August 2026 emphasised the need for early resolution of pending water-related issues among southern states.
Shah called for joint meetings that would bring together the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Inter-State Council and the respective state governments. The statement followed discussions on long-running disputes over river water sharing that have periodically strained relations between states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala.
Inter-state water conflicts have historically been addressed through tribunals, Supreme Court interventions and bilateral negotiations. Shah's proposal seeks a more coordinated central mechanism to accelerate settlement.
No specific timeline or list of priority rivers was attached to the announcement. Implementation will depend on the willingness of the state governments to participate in the proposed joint format.
Water allocation remains one of the most politically sensitive subjects in Indian federalism. Any structured process that reduces the frequency of crisis-driven litigation would have practical consequences for agriculture, industry and urban supply in the affected basins.
