Category 4 Hurricane Simon Skirts West-Central Mexico Coast with Catastrophic Wind and Flood Threat
Hurricane Simon, with sustained winds near 155 mph, moved parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast on Sunday, bringing life-threatening storm surge, heavy rain and the risk of mudslides to Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán while forecasters assessed whether the core would make a direct landfall.

Hurricane Simon remained a Category 4 storm on Sunday as its eye moved slowly north-northwest parallel to the west-central coast of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds of 155 mph early in the day, only just below Category 5 strength, with the centre about 60 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo.
A hurricane warning covers the shore from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito, including the port of Manzanillo and areas near Cabo Corrientes at the southern edge of the bay that holds Puerto Vallarta. Forecasters said catastrophic wind and life-threatening storm surge were likely along that stretch. Heavy rainfall of 10 to 20 inches, with isolated totals of 30 inches, is expected over portions of southwestern Mexico through Monday, producing flooding and mudslides in steep terrain.
The storm has moved slowly since becoming a hurricane, at times less than 10 km/h. That pace increases the duration of impacts. By Sunday afternoon the track appeared to keep the centre just offshore, but the eastern eyewall was expected to produce hurricane-force conditions as it brushed the coast. Some models had earlier brought the core inland; the slower motion and slight westward shift reduced the probability of a full landfall in the short term while leaving coastal communities under the strongest winds and surge.
Mexican authorities closed the Port of Manzanillo and prohibited non-essential activities in ten coastal municipalities of Jalisco. The Navy evacuated about 100 families from Yelapa and Quimixto by ferry to Puerto Vallarta. One death was reported earlier in Guerrero when a wall collapsed. Power poles, trees and houses were damaged in Acapulco as outer bands moved through.
Simon formed on 7 October from a low-pressure area south of Mexico and intensified rapidly into a major hurricane. It is the ninth major hurricane of an extremely active 2026 Pacific season. Peak intensity reached 155 mph with a central pressure of 928 mb. Interaction with the Sierra Madre terrain is expected to weaken the system if the core moves closer to land, but the rainfall threat will persist even if winds decrease.
Swells generated by the hurricane will affect the southwestern and west-central coasts for several days, creating dangerous surf and rip currents. Residents in the warning area were advised to remain in safe rooms while the strongest conditions pass. Further weakening is forecast once the centre moves farther north or interacts more fully with land.
The slow forward speed has complicated forecasts. A track that stays just offshore could allow the hurricane to maintain major intensity longer than an inland path. Officials in Jalisco and Colima continued preparations for flooding and possible isolation of coastal communities. The National Hurricane Center emphasised that the most significant hazards were already under way on Sunday.
By late Sunday the centre was near 19.6N 105.8W with winds of about 130 mph as terrain began to affect the inner core. The forecast keeps the storm near the coast into Monday before gradual weakening. Additional rainfall totals of 8 to 16 inches remain possible across Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.
The combination of extreme winds, storm surge and prolonged heavy rain places west-central Mexico under one of the strongest threats of the 2026 season. Local emergency services continued evacuations and shelter operations while monitoring the track for any further shift toward the coast.
