Brazil closed a three-match tour of Australia and India with a 4-0 win over India in Kolkata on Saturday. Samuel Lino scored his first two goals for the national team. Chelsea winger Estevao opened the scoring and made the second for Pedro. The crowd at Salt Lake Stadium was about 51,000, and it cheered the visitors as loudly as it cheered India.
Carlo Ancelotti treated the night as another experiment. He made eight changes from Tuesday's 4-2 win over Australia and kept only Vinicius Junior, Danilo and Gabriel Bontempo. The tour ends with two wins and a draw. India was the third and easiest of the three on the scoreboard, which is not the same as saying the first half hour was easy.
India's plan was visible and, for a while, effective. The defence left Vinicius on the left and tried to catch him offside. The midfield sat low. Long balls went up to Manvir Singh, the lone forward. That trap bought time. It did not buy a chance that changed the game. In the 28th minute Estevao cut in from the right and finished with his left foot at the near post. He then split the defence for Pedro, who scored the second before half-time.
The second half repeated the pattern in a different part of the pitch. India came out with more purpose. Manvir tested the Brazilian goalkeeper from a tight angle. The cost of playing out from deep arrived around the hour. A loose pass from Bijoy, inside his own third, went straight to Lino. The Flamengo winger, 26, curled a dipping shot past substitute goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill. In stoppage time Lino beat Edmund, carried the ball into the box and threaded a low shot through a crowd of blue shirts. Gill could not reach it. The score was 4-0.
Lino's brace is the individual fact that will travel. He had not scored for Brazil before Saturday. He leaves Kolkata with two, one from a gift and one he made himself, on a night when Vinicius, the player the stadium had come to see, did not score. Ancelotti's rotation explains part of that. A front line rebuilt from the Australia match is not arranged around one winger. Estevao, Pedro and Lino were the combination that actually functioned.
For India the tape is more useful than the scoreline suggests, and also less comforting. The offside trap on Vinicius worked often enough to be a plan rather than an accident. The rest of the Brazilian side did not need him. Once Estevao started coming inside, the trap on the left was irrelevant. The second-half goal from a pass inside India's own third is the habit Ancelotti's team is built to punish: a short goal-kick sequence, one heavy touch, a forward already facing the goal. Gill, on for the second half, had no chance at the curl and little chance at the fourth.
Salt Lake has seen this kind of night before, a full house for a side that is not going to win, and a noise that belongs to the visitors by the hour mark. Fifty-one thousand is a serious number for a friendly with no competitive point attached. The All India Football Federation got the gate. It also got a public measure of the gap, taken by a Brazil team missing eight of the players who had beaten Australia 4-2 four days earlier.
Ancelotti goes home with a tour record of two wins and a draw, a new scorer, and a look at Estevao in a starting role on the right. India goes home with a half hour of a plan that held, and an hour that did not. The four goals are on the sheet. The pass from Bijoy is the one Indian coaches will rewind.
