Anthropic puts $100 million into a residency that aims to badge 10,000 engineers
The company launched Claude Frontier Academy on 2 October. The first residency runs in San Francisco, New York and London, with engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk. The first Frontier Deployed Engineer badges are expected in early 2027.

Anthropic said on 2 October that it will spend 100 million dollars on Claude Frontier Academy, a training programme whose target is 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027. The first cohorts are already running in San Francisco, New York and London. Engineers in them come from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, among others.
The structure borrows the shape of medical training, which is the comparison Anthropic uses itself. A candidate works through a simulated enterprise deployment, from choosing a use case to a security review and a handover, and then sits a graded practical on a fresh scenario. Those who pass receive a Claude Resident Engineer badge and enter a 12-week residency. During those 12 weeks they lead a real Claude deployment inside their own employer, with Anthropic engineers as mentors and with the rest of the cohort as a peer group. A second assessment at the end of the residency awards the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge. Anthropic expects the first of those badges in early 2027.
Nomination is the gate. The company says the residency is not an open course. Firms put forward people, and Anthropic says the bar is high. The early access list is customers and partners. Steve Corfield, Anthropic's global head of business development and partnerships, said the academy is meant to set a standard for how AI is built inside a business. The practical effect is narrower than that sentence. Anthropic is training people to deploy Anthropic's model, on Anthropic's credential, inside firms that already pay Anthropic. A badge that proves capability is also a badge that ties a consultant's CV to one vendor.
The 100 million dollar figure needs a denominator. Spread to the end of 2027, against a target of 10,000 engineers, it is about 10,000 dollars a head if the money were only tuition. It is not only tuition. Cohorts in three cities, mentor time from Anthropic staff, and a residency that sits inside the client's own systems all cost more than a classroom. The company has not published a budget split. What it has published is the headcount and the date.
The launch lands in the same week as reporting on Anthropic's path toward a public listing. Benzinga, citing a leaked copy of an IPO prospectus reported earlier, said the firm generated nearly 4.6 billion dollars of revenue last year and posted an operating loss above 8 billion. Those figures are not in Anthropic's academy announcement. They are the context in which a 100 million dollar training pledge reads as a customer-retention tool as well as a skills programme. A company losing several billion on operations needs the large accounts, the banks and the consultancies on the first-cohort list, to stay and to expand. Teaching their staff to ship Claude projects is a direct way to do that.
The medical analogy has a limit the announcement does not dwell on. A residency in a hospital ends with a doctor who can work in any hospital. A Frontier Deployed Engineer residency ends with someone assessed on Claude. The credential Anthropic issues will mean a lot to a buyer choosing between model vendors, and less to a buyer who has already standardised on someone else. That is fine for Anthropic. It is the point. The open question for the consultancies is whether a cohort of badged staff becomes a practice line they can sell, or a group of people whose market value depends on one supplier still being the default in 2028.
Registration for now goes through an Anthropic account team, or through a partner manager. The company says further programmes will be announced. The only one with a timetable, a city list and a named set of employers is the residency that started this week.
