Defence ministry signs a 661.5 crore BrahMos launcher deal for Navy ships
The contract with BrahMos Aerospace was signed in New Delhi on 6 October in the presence of defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, under the Buy Indian-IDDM category. Indigenous content is put at a minimum of 68 percent. The ministry said the work would run for three years and draw in small firms. BrahMos remains the Navy's main surface-to-surface missile.

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited for fire-control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships. The value is 661.50 crore rupees. Defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present at the signing in New Delhi. The buy is under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which requires the kit to be designed, developed and made in India.
The Press Information Bureau note puts indigenous content at a minimum of 68 percent and says the work will draw in Indian industry, including micro, small and medium firms, over three years. It does not give a job count. It does say the contract is meant to strengthen maritime strike capacity and to push local production of a system the Navy already treats as standard.
BrahMos, fitted on frontline warships, is the Navy's primary surface-to-surface missile for maritime strike. The official description says it can hit land and sea targets at extended range, at supersonic speed, with what the note calls pinpoint accuracy. The Tuesday contract is not for the missiles themselves. It is for the fire-control system and the launchers, which are the shipboard half of the weapon: the computers that pass a target from the ship's sensors to the round, and the tubes or canisters the round leaves from. A ship can carry missiles in a magazine and still be unable to fire them if the launcher and the fire-control set are not fitted, aligned and accepted by the ship's trials team.
That distinction sets the size of the deal. At 661.50 crore, this is a fitting-out contract, not a fleet-wide missile buy. Those missile orders have run larger, because the round itself, a ramjet supersonic weapon developed with Russia and then indigenised in stages, is the expensive item. The IDDM label and the 68 percent content floor are the industrial point. BrahMos Aerospace is the joint venture that builds the missile, with Indian and Russian shareholding. A fire-control and launcher order under an Indian-design category keeps the shipyard work, the cabling and a share of the electronics inside Indian firms for the three years the note mentions.
The Navy's use of BrahMos has expanded from a few destroyers and frigates to a wider set of surface combatants, and to a coastal battery version operated with the army, plus the air force's air-launched variant on the Su-30MKI. Tuesday's paper does not name the hulls that will receive the new sets. Until a shipyard list appears, the public fact is the buyer, the seller, the price, the category and the content floor. Shipyards that have cut steel for the next frigates will read the contract as a signal that launcher sets are funded, which is the long-lead item a hull cannot sail without.
Singh's presence is the bureaucratic marker that the file has cleared the secretariat, not only the service headquarters. For a reader tracking indigenous naval weapons, the useful comparison is with earlier BrahMos ship fits, which established the missile as the Navy's main anti-ship and land-attack round, and with the separate argument over extended-range versions. This contract does not settle the range argument. It pays for the equipment that lets a ship fire the round it already has.
The three-year employment line in the PIB note is the other concrete claim. A 661.50 crore order spread across a prime contractor and MSME suppliers is small beside a frigate programme, and large beside a single electronics workshop. The 68 percent floor is the number an auditor can test: invoices, value addition, and the import content that has to stay under 32 percent. If that test is met, the contract does what the IDDM category was written to do. If it is missed, the category label is a file header. The signing on Tuesday starts the clock on that test.
