Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit assumed charge as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force on 31 October 2026. He succeeded Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who retired after 42 years of service. The formal handover took place at Air Force Station New Delhi, where Singh received a ceremonial guard of honour before transferring command.
Dixit, born on 9 December 1966, was commissioned into the fighter stream on 6 December 1986. He is an experimental test pilot and qualified flying instructor with more than 3,500 flying hours on aircraft including the Mirage-2000, MiG variants, Jaguar and Tejas LCA Mk-1. Before becoming Vice Chief of the Air Staff on 1 July 2026, he served as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee and as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command.
In his first public address on 1 November at the Parade Ground of Air Force Station New Delhi, Dixit summarised his priorities under the single word VAYU. V stands for vigilance and readiness: every squadron, radar and air defence unit, together with every air warrior, must be able to respond at short notice. Restoring combat strength toward the sanctioned level is a primary task. A stands for Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance. Tejas Mk-1A and Mk-2, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, Indian sensors and Indian weapons rank as highest priorities. The force will fight with Indian solutions held in numbers that sustain operations.
Y and U cover innovation and unity of effort. Dixit noted that drones, long-range precision weapons, space, cyber, artificial intelligence and the electromagnetic spectrum are reshaping the character of war. The Air Force must transform into the force India will need in the next decade while remaining ready to fight and win. He acknowledged the role of his predecessor in Operation Sindoor, under whose leadership the force demonstrated precise and decisive air power.
Dixit’s career includes command of a Mirage-2000 squadron, a forward base support unit in the western sector and Air Force Station Bidar. He served as Air Defence Commander at Southern Air Command, Senior Air Staff Officer at South Western Air Command and Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, where he steered capability development and procurement. He was instrumental in the Jaguar and MiG-27 upgrade projects and in the initial and final operational clearance activities for the Tejas LCA Mk-1. During Operation Sindoor he held the post of Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, giving him direct experience in joint planning.
The government appointed him on 6 October 2026. The appointment places a test pilot and joint-staff veteran at the head of the force at a moment when squadron numbers remain below sanctioned strength and new platforms are still entering service. The VAYU framing links readiness, indigenous production and inter-service coordination without introducing new organisational structures. Implementation will depend on the pace of Tejas deliveries, progress on the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft and the ability to sustain flying and maintenance rates across existing fleets.
Dixit laid a wreath at the National War Memorial earlier on 1 November. The sequence of events, from the 31 October handover through the public address the following day, completed the transition within 48 hours of the outgoing chief’s retirement. The new chief’s emphasis on Indian solutions and restored combat strength sets measurable benchmarks against which subsequent statements and budget allocations can be read.
