At least 17 people died and 25 were injured on Saturday evening when a crowd surged outside the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata. The incident occurred around 7.40 pm on Maha Saptami as rain began and visitors waiting in narrow lanes pushed forward toward the entrance and exit.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 17 people were brought dead to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Thirteen of the dead were women and one was a child. One of the 25 injured remained in critical condition while the others were reported out of danger or transferred. Adhikari said organisers of the community puja and private security staff had been detained. He announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed. The state will cover full medical costs for the injured and provide Rs 5 lakh to each of them. A fact-finding committee will investigate the causes.
Kolkata Police stated that the stampede occurred at the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chorbagan) pandal in the Girish Park police station area due to heavy crowds of pandal visitors during rain. All injured persons were rescued and taken to hospital. Reinforcements from the control room, fire brigade, disaster management group and ambulances were deployed. The pandal was closed to visitors. As a precaution, police asked several other major Durga Puja pandals in the city to close temporarily.
Eyewitnesses described a combination of narrow entrance and exit points, unlit surroundings and sudden heavy showers. One man whose daughter and granddaughter were among the injured told reporters that the entrance was very narrow, the exit was narrow, and there was no lighting in the area. A queue of about one and a half hours had formed. When rain started, people rushed forward and some fell. Another account mentioned that a portion of the temporary structure collapsed under the pressure, adding to the panic in the confined lanes near Muktaram Babu Street.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the stampede as extremely distressing. His office announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each person who died and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the administration was ensuring all possible medical facilities for the injured. He cancelled planned visits to some pandals after the incident.
The Chorbagan Sarbojanin pandal has been held for 91 years. This year’s theme was described by organisers as “Beyond Sound.” Durga Puja is a major annual festival in Kolkata, drawing millions of visitors to hundreds of pandals, many of them built in dense residential neighbourhoods with limited street access. The combination of evening rainfall, a weekend crowd and constrained physical access turned an ordinary queue into a fatal crush. Disaster management teams and medical staff responded immediately, but the density of the crowd limited the speed of rescue in the narrow lanes.
Adhikari, the chief secretary, the health minister and senior police officials visited the hospital to meet the injured. Six bodies had been identified by late evening, and arrangements were being made to bring family members. The state government activated a toll-free helpline for information on the victims. Preliminary reports indicate that the majority of those killed were women, consistent with the composition of many evening pandal-visiting groups.
Stampedes at large Indian religious and cultural gatherings have occurred when the rate of arrival exceeds the capacity of entry and exit routes. This case involved a long-established community pandal rather than a purpose-built venue with controlled access. The fact-finding committee is expected to examine the layout of the gates, lighting arrangements, any announcements made by organisers, the deployment of security personnel and the effect of the sudden rain. Temporary closures of other high-traffic pandals are intended to reduce the risk of similar incidents while the investigation proceeds and weather conditions remain unsettled.
The deaths took place on the second day of the main Puja period. Millions of people continue to move between pandals across the city. Local authorities have increased monitoring at remaining open sites. The compensation packages from both the state and the central government will be processed through established channels once identities are confirmed. Families of the deceased have begun arriving at the hospital as identification continues.
