Katie Zacharia is no longer White House press secretary after five days in the role. President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he had advised her to reconsider the job. White House officials confirmed she was transitioning out. The departure makes her the shortest-serving press secretary in the position’s history, shorter than Anthony Scaramucci’s tenure in 2017.
Zacharia gave her only briefing on Tuesday. She read largely from a script, took three questions from friendly outlets and ended after roughly 14 minutes. Subsequent coverage focused on whether she had presented herself as a practising attorney. She holds a law degree but has not passed the bar exam in any jurisdiction and is not licensed to practise. Trump had described her as an attorney. In interviews she acknowledged failing the bar and said she had not retaken it.
Trump, speaking as he left for a midterm rally, said he told Zacharia: “Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider.” He added that the press had treated her harshly and that she might continue in the administration in a different capacity. Zacharia posted that it had been an honour to work for the president and described him in positive terms. She was seen at the White House on Friday morning and had been invited to dinner with Vice President JD Vance that evening.
The appointment followed the departure of Karoline Leavitt. Zacharia had been a conservative commentator. Her selection drew immediate attention to her limited Washington experience. After the briefing, some White House staff questioned how long she would remain. The combination of the short, scripted appearance and the credential questions produced sustained coverage that the administration chose not to defend.
The episode occurs during the final stretch before midterm elections. It leaves the communications operation without a permanent press secretary for the second time in recent months. No successor has been named. The five-day tenure is now the benchmark for the shortest service in the role.
Zacharia’s exit returns the White House to the search for a spokesperson capable of handling the briefing room under current conditions. The public record of the briefing, the bar-exam admission and Trump’s on-the-record advice to reconsider are the documented elements of the decision.
