The Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Monday night and lead the American League division series two games to none. The game ran 3 hours and 6 minutes in clear weather at 61 degrees, with 32,050 in the park.
Sean Burke, now 1-0 in the series, got the win. Erik Sabrowski took the loss, 0-1. Grant Taylor recorded his second save of the series. The line was Chicago 4 runs on 6 hits and an error, Cleveland 3 runs on 4 hits and an error. Cleveland scored twice in the first and once in the eighth. Chicago's four runs came as a single run in the fourth and three in the sixth.
The box is a low-hit game that turned on a short burst. Kyle Teel had a hit and scored. Miguel Vargas reached twice on walks, had a hit, and scored. Munetaka Murakami had a hit and a run batted in. Romy Gonzalez is not in this line. Andrew Benintendi did not hit in two at-bats. Randal Grichuk, pinch-hitting, walked and scored. The Guardians' four hits were not enough once the sixth inning put Chicago in front.
A two-game lead in a best-of-five is not a pennant. It does mean Cleveland has to win Game 3 in Chicago on Wednesday, or the series ends at home for the team that was supposed to be the visitor. The Wednesday starter card on the public schedule has Cleveland at Chicago. A loss there and the Guardians are on the brink in a park that just held 32,050 for a one-run game.
The series shape is the point for the rest of the bracket. On the same night the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 5-2 and also led their division series 2-0. Two road or lower-seed clubs, depending on the bracket print, have put the favourites in a hole before the midpoint. The National League side is not in the same place: the Dodgers and Atlanta were tied 1-1 going into Tuesday's Game 3, and Milwaukee led San Diego 2-0 going into Tuesday night.
Burke's win is a postseason line, not a season line. A reliever or starter who gets the decision in a 4-3 game with a three-run sixth has done the job the series asked. Taylor's second save says the Sox are closing these games rather than handing them back. Sabrowski's loss is the Cleveland side of the same inning. A bullpen decision in October is often the whole story, and here the sixth inning was three of Chicago's four runs.
Murakami's hit and run batted in will be the line Japanese coverage pulls out. He is in the White Sox order in October, which is the fact, and he has a hit in a one-run series game. Vargas's two walks and a hit are the quieter contribution. Teel scored. None of that is a star line. It was enough.
The open item is Wednesday. Cleveland needs the win to bring the series back to a game that can be tied. Chicago can end the series at home if it wins Game 3. The Monday score does not say which of those happens. It says the Guardians are the team that has to win next.
