West Bengal will shut liquor shops on Maha Ashtami and bar DJs from immersion processions

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told Durga Puja organisers at Milan Mela Prangan on 7 September that every liquor shop and bar in the state will close on Maha Ashtami, 19 October, the day devotees offer anjali to the goddess.

"On the day when devotees offer anjali to Maa Durga, all liquor shops in the state will remain closed. There will be no liquor available in bars either," he said.

Shops already shut on Dashami, the immersion day. Ashtami has not been a statewide dry date in recent seasons. The new rule creates two dry days inside the festival week. Demand for alcohol during Puja is high in Kolkata and the districts. The order is a direct cut in that trade for one of the four big days.

DJs, roads and themes

Adhikari also banned DJ music during the festival and during immersion processions. Theme pandals remain legal. Committees were told to choose subjects that do not offend Sanatan sentiment. He asked organisers not to insult religious feeling in idols, structures or scripts.

National highways cannot be blocked for puja work. Thirteen major Kolkata roads, including Red Road and Cathedral Road, are off limits for pandal construction. The government will also bar cranes from immersion ghats, a safety rule Adhikari announced the same day.

On the other side of the ledger, puja committees will receive a grant of Rs 1 lakh, free electricity and a waiver of the fee for the mandatory fire-safety licence. Those concessions are the price of the restrictions. Clubs that depend on sponsorship and crowd size now have cash and power support, and they have lost two tools that pull night crowds: liquor on Ashtami and DJ rigs on the streets.

A first-year calendar

Adhikari took office after the May 2026 election. This is his first Durga Puja as chief minister. The Milan Mela meeting was framed as coordination. It was also a statement of taste. Mamata Banerjee's years in office treated the festival as a civic carnival with state money and few moral conditions. The new list is narrower: money and power yes, alcohol on Ashtami no, DJs no, highway pandals no, crane immersions no.

Enforcement will decide whether the list is real. Excise officers can shut shops on a named date. Stopping DJs on a procession route in north Kolkata is harder. The road ban is enforceable if police refuse permission. The theme rule is not a statute with a penalty attached in the remarks released on Monday. It is an instruction to committees that also take the Rs 1 lakh.

Puja 2026 now has a written calendar from the chief minister's office. Ashtami is dry. Dashami was already dry. The speakers come down. The grant goes out. The first test is 19 October, when the shops are supposed to stay locked while anjali is offered.
