Sankaramanchi Janaki, known to generations of filmgoers as Sowcar Janaki, died on 21 August in Chennai at the age of 94. She had been admitted to a private hospital after a brief illness.
Janaki debuted in the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru and went on to appear in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Her career spanned seven decades and included both leading roles and character parts that defined several eras of South Indian cinema.
Among her widely remembered performances are those in Thillu Mullu (1981) and Akka Chellelu (1970). She worked with successive generations of directors and actors, maintaining a presence on screen long after many of her contemporaries had retired.
The nickname “Sowcar” derived from her early association with the film Shavukaru and became the name by which she was known throughout the industry. Colleagues and younger actors frequently cited her discipline and her ability to move between comic and dramatic registers without apparent effort.
Her death closes a chapter that began in the early years of the studio system and continued into the contemporary period of multi-language productions. Tributes from the film community emphasised the length of her working life and the consistency of her craft rather than any single breakthrough role.
Funeral arrangements were being finalised in Chennai. The industry response reflected the respect she commanded across linguistic film industries that otherwise often operate in separate spheres.
