Venugopal says Rahul Gandhi will be the INDIA bloc's face in 2029
The AICC general secretary, speaking in Thrissur, dismissed reports that Tamil Nadu chief minister C. Joseph Vijay would be floated as a prime ministerial candidate at a 9 September alliance meeting.

Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal said on Sunday that Rahul Gandhi will lead the INDIA bloc into the 2029 Lok Sabha election and that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has not asked for Tamil Nadu chief minister C. Joseph Vijay to be the alliance's prime ministerial candidate. "Nobody should create any such confusion. Rahul Gandhi will be the face of the INDIA alliance," he told reporters in Thrissur.
The remark was aimed at a meeting TVK has called for 9 September to discuss a wider opposition grouping. Vijay's party took office in Tamil Nadu only three months ago. Some TVK circles have talked about putting the actor-turned-chief minister on a national ticket. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore had already drawn a line. "The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee is very clear. Our candidate is Rahul Gandhi. There is no doubt about that," Tagore said, while confirming that Congress would still attend the 9 September meeting.
Venugopal went further. He called Gandhi "the most prominent leader loved by the people of India today" and said the fights Gandhi has chosen, for students, farmers and the young, are the ones the country is watching. He added that the INDIA alliance is moving, with some states still running competing local tickets, and that this is ordinary coalition friction rather than a change of national face.
The timing is not accidental. Congress spent Saturday reshuffling organisational posts, putting Sachin Pilot in charge of poll-bound Punjab and moving Bhupesh Baghel to Assam, with Randeep Singh Surjewala adding Gujarat to Karnataka. A national face fight on Sunday would have cut across that tidy list. Venugopal's job as general secretary (organisation) is to keep state units inside a single frame. Naming Gandhi now, three years before the Lok Sabha vote, is a way to close a rumour before the Chennai meeting gives it a microphone.
TVK has not, on the public record Venugopal cited, tabled a demand. That matters. A demand on paper would force Congress to refuse a partner it may still want in Tamil Nadu. A rumour in TVK corridors can be waved off as "confusion." Tagore's willingness to sit at the 9 September table while repeating the Gandhi line is the same manoeuvre in a state voice.
INDIA as a brand has been uneven since 2024. Some partners fight Congress at the state level and share a stage with it against the BJP at the Centre. Venugopal admitted that split in so many words. His claim is that the split does not extend to the prime ministerial question. Whether Vijay's own party accepts that claim will be visible on Wednesday. If TVK stays silent on the PM chair, Venugopal's sentence stands. If a TVK speaker uses the meeting to float Vijay, Congress will have to repeat the refusal in the room rather than in Thrissur.
Gandhi remains Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. That is the institutional fact under the rhetoric. Venugopal's other sentence, that everyone is listening to Gandhi's decisions, is a party line, not a poll. The useful piece of Sunday is narrower: Congress has told a new southern chief minister, in public, that the 2029 ticket is not open. The 9 September meeting will show whether TVK heard that as an invitation or as a door closing.
