Vattenfall turns retired turbine nacelles into houses and blades into skis
A four-by-ten-metre nacelle from an Austrian tower is now a 35-square-metre house with a heat pump and solar water heater. Evi Ski in Lønset lays recovered carbon fibre on wooden cores. Europe added 8.8 GW of wind in the first half of 2026, up 30 percent, and the blade waste problem is growing with it.

Vattenfall is sending retired wind hardware into houses, car parks and alpine skis rather than into landfill, a set of projects that Euronews and trade outlets recirculated this week as Europe heads for a record year of new turbines.
WindEurope says the continent installed 8.8 gigawatts of new wind capacity in the first half of 2026, up 30 percent from a year earlier. The same boom produces a disposal problem. Blades, nacelle covers and nose cones are composite. They do not melt cleanly. Burning them wastes the carbon fibre. Burying them fills pits. Vattenfall banned landfill for those parts in 2021 and has been looking for buyers who can use the shapes as they are.
The most photographed experiment is a tiny house built with Dutch studio Superuse from a nacelle cover that once sat on an Austrian tower. The box is four metres wide, ten metres long and three metres high, about 35 square metres inside. It now holds a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room, with a heat pump, solar panels and a solar water heater. It was shown at Dutch Design Week in 2024 as a test of reuse that avoids energy-heavy reprocessing. It is a prototype, not a housing programme.
The ski line is further along. When the Irene Vorrink farm in the Netherlands came down in 2022, the contractor was ready to incinerate the blades. Norwegian industrial designer Endre Hals, who runs Evi Ski from a workshop in Lønset, wanted long carbon-fibre strands for ski construction. Vattenfall and recycler Gjenkraft now supply those fibres. Hals lays them on wooden cores. “We want to use these long fibers from wind turbine blades to create something else that’s long, like skis. And after that, we can use them for something shorter,” he said. The pitch is mechanical as well as green. Long fibres make a strong ski. A short offcut can later become something else.
Other trials use blades as frames for solar panels and as structural pieces in cabins and parking decks. Julius-Philipp, speaking for the reuse work, said the house, the blade buildings and the skis “are not yet a large-scale solution” and exist to gain experience and to pull a market into being.
That honesty is useful. A 35-square-metre house made from one nacelle does not absorb the volume of hardware coming off European ridges. A pair of skis uses a sliver of one blade. The industrial question is whether grind-and-reprocess plants can take the rest at a price that beats incineration. Some chemical recycling cuts the value of the recovered fibre. That is why Vattenfall prefers projects that keep the material long.
Europe’s 8.8 GW of new build in six months means the retirement wave in the 2030s will be larger than the one from the 2000s farms now coming down. If reuse stays at the level of design-week objects, the pits and the incinerators will take the bulk. If the ski and beam work finds paying customers, a fraction of the carbon fibre stays in products that last another decade.
The house in the nacelle is the image. The landfill ban from 2021 is the policy. The ski workshop in Lønset is the small factory test. None of the three is a circular economy on its own. Together they are the first invoices against a waste stream that is about to grow by a third in a single year of new turbines.
