Vaishnaw: India-made bullet train body frame is ready, track tests in May-June 2027
The first frame went for a squeeze test two days earlier. He said a Prime Ministerial inauguration could follow two to four months of trials. Vadodara to Mumbai is billed at about 90 minutes.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Vadodara on Tuesday, 8 September, that the first body frame of an India-built bullet train was completed two days earlier and has gone for a squeeze test. Track testing, he said, should start in May or June 2027. After two to four months of trials, the Prime Minister would inaugurate the train. The remarks came at the same event where Narendra Modi opened Western Dedicated Freight Corridor sections.
Vaishnaw said a Vadodara–Mumbai run on the high-speed line would take about 90 minutes. He also said civil work on the Surat–Vapi section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor would finish by December 2026. In a Rajya Sabha reply last Friday he had refused a single completion date for the full 508 km corridor, saying the date depends on civil, track, electrical, signalling and telecommunication works and on the supply of trainsets. Those two statements can sit together. A trainset can be tested on a finished stretch while other stretches remain under construction. The full Ahmedabad–Mumbai service is still described in official material as a 2029 target.
The squeeze test is a compression check on the aluminium or steel shell before bogies, interiors and signalling gear go on. It is an early factory gate, not a passenger-ready train. Saying the frame exists is a manufacturing milestone. Saying it will be on track next May is a schedule. Indian public projects of this size have missed both kinds of sentence before. The useful comparison is with the minister’s own July remark that the corridor was nearly 80% complete and that Surat–Bilimora would open first in 2027, followed by Vapi–Surat, Vapi–Ahmedabad and then the Thane and Mumbai ends.
Japan remains the technology and finance partner on the corridor. An India-made trainset is a separate industrial claim: that the shell, and later the train, can be produced at home under Atmanirbhar Bharat rather than only imported as a set. If the May 2027 test happens on a live high-speed section, that claim becomes measurable. If the test slips onto a conventional line or a factory loop, it becomes a photograph.
Travel time is the number riders will use. Ninety minutes Vadodara to Mumbai assumes the high-speed alignment, not the present Western Railway stopping pattern. Current superfast timings are more than twice that. The 90-minute figure is therefore a design speed claim. It will be true only when both the trainset and the track are certified at the advertised velocity, and when station approaches at each end do not eat the saving.
Vaishnaw spoke with the Prime Minister on the same stage that commissioned freight tracks. Freight and high-speed passenger rail share a political file and almost no engineering file. The freight corridor is steel in the ground this week. The bullet train is a frame in a test rig and a date in 2027. Readers should keep those two objects apart. One is open. The other has a squeeze-test stamp and a summer trial window. The gap between them is the actual state of India’s high-speed programme on 8 September 2026.
