Uttar Pradesh has evacuated more than 17,500 people from flood-hit ground across 26 districts, the state government said on 4 September. About 3.53 lakh people have been affected. 4,847 were in relief shelters. Officials said there had been no loss of life or livestock in the current spell.
The Ganga had crossed the warning level in Varanasi and was flowing above the danger level in Ballia. The Ghaghra was also running high. The India Meteorological Department forecast rain and thundershowers at many places in western Uttar Pradesh and at a few places in the east over the next 24 hours, with heavy rain possible at isolated western locations.
A river system, not a single breach
Twenty-six districts is a basin story. When the Ganga, Ghaghra and their tributaries rise together, the flood line moves through eastern and central districts that already sit close to the river. Evacuation numbers in the mid-teens of thousands, against an affected population above three lakh, mean most households are living with water in the fields and on the roads rather than in camps.
4,847 people in shelters is the figure that shows who could not stay. The rest of the 17,500 who were moved have been sent to safer ground, schools, or relatives. The state's claim of zero deaths will be tested if the next IMD pulse is heavier than the last.
Delhi's rain is a different file
The same weather system soaked Delhi on 4 September. IMD issued a red alert for intense rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Nine flights were diverted from Indira Gandhi International Airport between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. when a 76 kmph squall cut visibility to 600 metres. Water collected on the forecourts of Terminals 2 and 3.
That airport disruption is already on the record separately. The Uttar Pradesh numbers matter more for the next week because the Ganga at Ballia does not recede on a red-alert timetable. Danger-level readings in the east can hold after the capital's roads have been pumped.
What the government has not said
The 4 September briefing did not publish a crop-loss estimate, a road-closure list, or a district-by-district shelter map. It did not say how many boats or National Disaster Response Force teams were on the water. Those details usually follow a flood by a few days, once tehsildars file their tallies.
For now the verified frame is this: 26 districts, 3.53 lakh people affected, 17,500 moved, 4,847 in camps, Ganga above danger at Ballia, no official deaths. The western-district rain forecast is the variable that can change all five of those numbers before the week is out.
