The United States has announced a new round of sanctions aimed at Iran and issued warnings to countries that continue commercial ties with Tehran.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the measures as part of “Operation Economic Outcast,” intended to cut Iran’s access to the US dollar and disrupt its remaining financial lifelines. The package includes secondary sanctions that could affect firms and governments still doing business with Iran.
Public support inside the United States for military action against Iran has fallen to its lowest level since the conflict began, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll closed on Monday. Only 31% of respondents backed continued military action, down from earlier readings. President Donald Trump’s overall approval ratings remain near record lows.
India, which has continued limited oil imports from Iran while navigating energy security needs, is among the countries monitoring the secondary measures closely. Washington has repeatedly pressed partners to reduce or end trade links.
US officials have not ruled out further military options in the region, including around the Strait of Hormuz, though the emphasis remains on economic pressure for now.
The sanctions come as Iran maintains influence over shipping in the strait and as related regional conflicts continue to affect global energy markets.
