India’s Unified Payments Interface marked its tenth anniversary in August 2026. Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI has grown into the world’s largest real-time payment system by volume of transactions.
The platform allows instant bank-to-bank transfers using mobile numbers, QR codes or virtual payment addresses. It underpins most retail digital payments in India, from street vendors to large e-commerce platforms.
Officials have highlighted the expansion of UPI to partner countries through bilateral linkages and the development of UPI international variants. The system’s design, which separates the payment address from the underlying bank account, has been studied by other central banks exploring real-time retail payment infrastructure.
Transaction volumes have risen steadily each year. The anniversary coincides with continued regulatory attention to fraud prevention, customer protection and the interoperability of new payment instruments built on the UPI rails.
The decade of UPI illustrates how a public digital infrastructure, once adopted at scale, can reshape everyday commerce without requiring users to hold specialised prepaid balances.
