India’s Unified Payments Interface marks ten years on 25 August 2026, having grown from a pilot with roughly 90,000 monthly transactions into the world’s largest real-time payment system by volume.
Annual transactions rose from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26. Transaction value climbed from ₹0.07 lakh crore to about ₹314 lakh crore over the same period. In July 2026 alone the platform processed a record 2,366 crore transactions worth nearly ₹30 lakh crore.
More than 740 banks now participate, up from 44 at launch. The system supports person-to-person and person-to-merchant payments through virtual addresses, mobile numbers or account details and operates around the clock. About 86 percent of merchant transactions remain under ₹500, reflecting its role in everyday small-value commerce.
UPI is live in 11 countries and accounts for the bulk of India’s digital payment volumes. Officials credit the open architecture, regulatory support from the Reserve Bank of India and the National Payments Corporation of India for the rapid adoption that has reached hundreds of millions of users, including many outside formal banking channels.
As the platform enters its second decade, attention turns to further international linkages and new features built on the same rails.
