Indians made 24.51 billion Unified Payments Interface transactions in August, the highest monthly count the National Payments Corporation of India has recorded. The figure is 3.6 percent above July's 23.66 billion and 22 percent above August 2025, when the system cleared 19.63 billion payments.
The money moving through those payments did not set a record. Value came in at Rs 29.82 lakh crore, 0.2 percent below July's Rs 29.88 lakh crore and short of the Rs 29.9 lakh crore peaks in May and July. Year on year, value is still up 20 percent from Rs 24.85 lakh crore in August 2025.
Average daily volume rose to 791 million from 763 million in July. Average daily value eased to about Rs 96,200 crore from Rs 96,383 crore. The pattern is familiar: more taps, slightly smaller tickets. Raksha Bandhan in August added a pulse of peer-to-peer transfers and small merchant payments, which lift count faster than they lift value.
A second straight volume record
July had already broken the volume record. August broke it again. May stood at 23.2 billion, June at 22.72 billion. The sequence says the system is no longer waiting for a single festival month to jump. It is adding hundreds of millions of payments as a routine monthly step.
NPCI posted the numbers on X on 1 September. The corporation runs the switch that links more than 700 participating banks. A decade after launch, annual volume is thousands of times the early totals. That history is known. The new fact in this print is the split between count and value. Households and kirana counters are putting more of daily life on UPI. They are not, in August, putting larger invoices on it.
Eleven countries and a festive runway
UPI acceptance now covers 11 countries. Uzbekistan is the latest. Outbound and inbound QR use is still a small slice of the 24.51 billion. The domestic rail remains the story. PhonePe has also begun pushing UPI on feature phones for users without smartphones or stable data, which, if it holds, will add low-value transactions to future monthly prints.
September and October usually raise both count and value as festive retail, travel and gifting pick up. If volume follows the July-August slope, the system will be close to 25 billion payments in a 30-day month. Value will only follow if average ticket size stops drifting down.
For banks and app owners the August table is a capacity note. 791 million payments a day is a load figure. It is also a reminder that UPI's public success is now measured in increments of a few hundred million transactions, not in whether the rails work at all.
