UN sets 27 November as the day against child marriage, with India as co-sponsor

The UN General Assembly on Friday, 4 September, adopted by consensus a Sierra Leone-led resolution that names 27 November each year as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. India was among about 70 co-sponsors. The 193-member Assembly did not take a recorded vote.

The date is not an accident for New Delhi. India launched the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat, or Child Marriage Free India, campaign on 27 November 2024. The campaign's published targets are a 10 percent cut in prevalence by 2026 and an end to the practice by 2030. Bhuwan Ribhu, founder of Just Rights for Children, was in the hall as the only civil society representative at the adoption. He had called for a UN day in a March 2026 address at the United Nations, with Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio among those present. Sierra Leone's First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, who also leads the Organization of African First Ladies for Development, had pushed the same calendar date.

The resolution asks member states to write and carry out national strategies that cut across ministries rather than sit in a single welfare file. Child, early and forced marriage is treated in the text as a practice that blocks education and health and violates the rights of girls in particular. A dedicated day does not change statute in any capital. It creates an annual hook for reporting, funding arguments and public campaigns.

India's co-sponsorship puts a domestic target on a UN calendar. The 2026 reduction goal is now less than four months away. Whether the government can show a 10 percent drop will be measured against the National Family Health Survey series and against state-level registration data, which remain uneven. Several Indian states have run special drives against under-age marriage. Enforcement still collides with custom, with poverty, and with the fact that many unions are never registered.

Sierra Leone's lead reflects a West African campaign that has used first ladies' networks as well as the UN floor. Consensus at the Assembly means no delegation wanted a public no. It does not mean every capital will fund a plan. The useful test after 27 November 2026, the first observance, is whether education and health budgets move, and whether police and registrars refuse to process an under-age file. A day on the UN list cannot do that work. A co-sponsor with a 2030 deadline has said it will.

Ribhu's presence at the adoption is a detail most UN social resolutions do not have. It ties the text to a specific Indian campaign rather than to a general appeal. That is the information a reader does not get from the title alone. The title is a date. The date is already India's.
