Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow and surrounding areas overnight into 18 August 2026, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Sobyanin reported that 620 unmanned aerial vehicles were directed at the capital region. Russian forces downed 180 of them, he said, with emergency services working at crash sites. The Russian Defense Ministry separately stated that air-defense systems shot down 316 Ukrainian drones over the course of Monday.
In a separate incident, a Russian missile attack killed 10 people in a village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Ukrainian authorities said.
The dual developments underscore the continuing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war even as global attention remains focused on the US-Iran conflict. Ukraine has conducted repeated long-range drone strikes against Russian territory, while Russia continues missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
No detailed casualty or damage figures from the Moscow attack were immediately released by Russian officials beyond the interception numbers.
