The United States has entered what Vice President JD Vance called a new phase of economic pressure against Iran.
On 21 August 2026 Vance said the administration would keep the pressure going as the best way to achieve its final objective. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the United States would impose the toughest sanctions in history and that economic isolation could eliminate the need for a return to direct combat.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded that Tehran has seen this movie before. The Iranian military chief warned of a devastating response to new threats.
The moves follow earlier military exchanges and the arrival of the USS George Washington to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln in the region. Houthis claimed two drone attacks on Saudi targets the previous day.
Oil prices rose to a three-week high on the announcement. Washington has also urged allies and China to join the isolation campaign.
