U.S. court dismisses criminal charges against Gautam Adani

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn dismissed with prejudice the criminal charges against Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and a former Adani Green executive on 10 August 2026. The charges of conspiracy, securities fraud, and wire fraud are ended and cannot be refiled.

The case, brought in late 2024, alleged that more than $250 million in bribes were paid to Indian officials to secure solar-power contracts and that U.S. investors were misled about the scheme. Adani and his companies denied the allegations throughout. The Justice Department had already indicated it would no longer pursue the charges. The judge examined the process that led to the dismissal, including whether a November 2024 pledge by Adani to invest $10 billion in the United States had influenced the decision. He stated he was satisfied the pledge played no role and noted the limited authority of courts over prosecutorial choices to drop cases.

Adani issued a short statement welcoming the ruling and expressing respect for the judicial process. Parallel civil matters with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Treasury Department had already been resolved through settlements. The dismissal removes a major legal risk for the Adani Group’s international financing and project activity.
