Two people died and 16 others were injured on November 6, 2026, when an interurban bus left the road and struck a tree in Lent, in the Ain department of eastern France.
The bus was traveling between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse and carried 43 passengers, including 15 children. The crash occurred around 7 a.m. local time on the departmental road D22. Mayor Yves Cristin of Lent said the vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree in the ditch. Emergency services deployed two helicopters. The communal safeguard plan was activated, and a neighboring commune prepared to receive families.
Authorities identified the dead as a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man. Three people remain in critical condition. Thirteen others sustained minor injuries. The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office opened an investigation on charges of road homicide and aggravated road traffic injuries. The driver was hospitalized and had not yet been interviewed at the time of the initial statements.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot visited the scene. He said the bus did not operate exclusively on school routes but that many schoolchildren were on board. Education Minister Édouard Geffray noted the difficulty when children are victims of such accidents. Rescue workers and gendarmes remained at the site for several hours while investigators examined the roadway and vehicle.
The bus operated on a regular interurban line. It was not a dedicated school service, though the presence of 15 children indicated it was used by students traveling to Bourg-en-Bresse. Local media reported that the road was closed while recovery operations continued. No official statement has been issued on the precise cause, pending the driver's interview and technical examination of the vehicle and road surface.
The prosecutor assigned the investigation to the research section of the Lyon gendarmerie. Flagrantdelito procedures allow immediate evidence collection. The number of passengers who were uninjured or treated on site has not been fully detailed beyond the confirmed fatalities and the 16 injured. Families of the victims were assisted by local authorities.
Lent lies approximately 55 kilometers from the Swiss border and about 10 kilometers south of Bourg-en-Bresse. The D22 is a secondary road used by regional bus services connecting smaller communes to the larger towns. Similar crashes on departmental roads in the region have previously led to reviews of speed limits and roadside barriers, though no specific prior incidents at this location were cited in initial reports.
The investigation will examine the driver's condition, the vehicle's mechanical state, and road conditions at the time of the crash. Results of the technical examination are expected in the coming days. The two deaths make this one of the more serious bus incidents in France this year involving school-age passengers.
