A shooting inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment tower on 2 September killed two civilians and the gunman and wounded three police officers. Officers were dispatched at 4:36 p.m. to 15 East Grant Street, a high-rise now called Shoreline Plaza and formerly Loring Towers, half a block from the Minneapolis Convention Center in the Loring Park neighbourhood.
They arrived within two minutes of the first 911 call, Sergeant Garrett Parten said, and found at least one person already shot. More gunfire was audible inside. Officers followed the sound through a haze that cut visibility. One civilian died at the scene. A second died after reaching Hennepin County Medical Center. The suspect was found dead. Local television, citing law-enforcement sources, said the wound was self-inflicted.
The officers and the building
Two officers were hit by gunfire. One had a non-life-threatening wound to the leg. A second went into surgery. A third officer was treated for an injury that was not a gunshot. All three were described as stable. The city said the block was secure by about 7:30 p.m. Governor Tim Walz said state public-safety staff were on the ground with the local force.
Umecua Agnew, 48, was in an elevator with two other adults and a child when the shots started. She sent the car back to the eighth floor and stayed inside until officers walked her out. “It just felt like the shooting was on every floor,” she said. Julius Bailey, sitting outside, said he saw a resident with a pistol, heard a woman scream, counted eight shots and ran.
What police would and would not say
Interim Chief Bill Peterson said officers “were familiar with who this individual was” and that he had no motive to announce. He did not name the suspect at the evening briefing. Multiple outlets, citing court files and departmental sources, identified him as Carlton Neal Johnson II, also reported as Carlton Johnson II, about 35. Property managers had sued in June to evict him from a ninth-floor flat. Sources told local stations he had been removed earlier on 2 September and that police had already been called to the apartment that day.
Those details were not confirmed on camera by the chief. They are the working account from reporters with the court docket and with officers who were not at the podium.
What is settled tonight
Three people are dead, including the man police treat as the shooter. Three officers are injured. The tower sits on a dense downtown block next to the city’s main convention hall. Federal and state investigators have joined the Minneapolis file. Motive, a full timeline of the eviction, and the path of the first shots, elevator or upper-floor corridor, are still being written. The facts that do not move are the address, the times, and the count of the dead.
