Trump will mark the 25th year of 9/11 at the Pentagon; Vance goes to New York

President Donald Trump will attend the 25th anniversary ceremony for the 11 September 2001 attacks at the Pentagon. Vice President JD Vance will be in New York. Other administration officials will go to the field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The White House confirmed the split after Trump was asked, on 28 August at Joint Base Andrews, why he would not be at the New York reading.

His answer was short. He said he was going to the Pentagon. In a social media post the same day he called 11 September a day to remember the victims and their families.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville. This year's ceremonies fall on a Friday. The quarter-century mark is the first 9/11 anniversary of Trump's second term.

Where he has stood before

Trump attended the Pentagon ceremony last year and spoke there about passengers on the hijacked aircraft. He last attended the Ground Zero ceremony in 2024. Vance had been scheduled for New York last year and instead flew to Salt Lake City after Charlie Kirk was killed.

The three sites have had a settled division of labour for years. The president often chooses one. Cabinet officers take the others. The 25th year invited an expectation that the sitting president, who is from New York, would stand in Lower Manhattan. He chose Arlington instead.

What the day is for

The New York ceremony is a reading of names. The Pentagon ceremony is on the west side of the building, on the lawn where American Airlines Flight 77 hit. Shanksville is a field and a bell. None of the three is a campaign rally in the official script. All three are now attended by people who were not born on the day.

A New York Times feature published this week followed Americans who were children in 2001 and who now describe the attacks as an inherited fact rather than a memory. That is the demographic fact of a 25th year. The first responders who still attend are older. The names are the same.

Trump's choice of the Pentagon puts him next to the building he also uses as a stage for current wars and current force decisions. Vance in New York will stand with families who have asked every president since George W. Bush to keep the reading free of slogans. Whether that request is honoured will be visible in the remarks, not in the travel schedule.

Friday is four days away. The split is set. The names will be read in three places. The president will hear them in Virginia.
