Trump Says Iran War Was Largely the Reason Republicans Lost Midterms, Defends Decision
President Donald Trump told reporters and the Wall Street Journal that the Iran war was a piece of the Republican midterm defeat because it raised gasoline prices, yet he said he would launch the war again to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

President Donald Trump said on November 4 that the war he launched against Iran was largely the reason Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress. Speaking at the White House ballroom construction site and in interviews with Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, he acknowledged the political cost while defending the military campaign.
Asked whether he agreed with Vice President JD Vance’s statement that the war was the reason Republicans lost, Trump replied that it was largely true because the conflict drove gasoline prices up in the short term. He added that if he had it to do again he would do it again, because Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. In the Wall Street Journal he said Iran was a piece of it and that he did the right thing.
Trump distinguished between the war itself and its effect on fuel prices. He told Fox News that people agree with the action against Iran but were not willing to accept the short-term consequence of higher gasoline prices. He said he understood that view even if he did not share it. Brent crude had risen above $95 a barrel in the days after the midterms; earlier in the conflict prices had climbed higher still.
An exit poll by Responsible Statecraft found that 74 percent of voters described the Iran war as a crucial or major factor in their congressional vote. Sixty-two percent said using military force against Iran was the wrong decision. Trump told Fox that he knew the war would have an impact yet maintained that preventing a nuclear Iran remained the priority. He ruled out changes to his Cabinet, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Democrats took the House and Senate on November 3, flipping at least seven Senate seats and dozens of House seats. Losses occurred in states Trump had carried comfortably in 2024, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. Trump said the main problem was that he was not on the ballot. He also cited candidate quality. He said he is willing to work with the new Democratic majorities and that he does not want to spend two years vetoing everything, yet he has already signaled he will use the veto.
Vance had written on X that the reason Republicans lost is the war and that any honest conversation about the future must start there. Trump’s comments align with that assessment on the political effect while rejecting any suggestion that the decision itself was a mistake. The war began earlier in 2026 with the stated aim of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. It has lasted nearly nine months.
Oil and gasoline prices rose as a direct result of the conflict and related disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has argued that the long-term strategic gain outweighs the short-term electoral cost. Democratic leaders have said the results show voters rejected both the war and the associated living costs. How the new Congress will use its oversight powers over the conflict remains to be tested once members are sworn in.
Trump made the remarks the day after the election while touring the ballroom project. He has not indicated any change in military posture. The acknowledgment that the war contributed to the loss is the clearest statement yet from the president on the electoral consequences of the campaign. Whether that recognition alters the administration’s approach before the next round of talks with Iran is not yet clear from the public comments.
The combination of higher fuel prices, the length of the conflict and the absence of a clear end date supplied Democrats with a consistent message in competitive races. Trump’s own words now confirm that he sees the same causal link, even as he maintains the decision was required.
