Trump Jr confirms a Putin ally paid for two nights of his Bahamas wedding

Donald Trump Jr and Bettina Trump said on 14 September that Umar Kremlev, a Russian boxing official close to Vladimir Putin, hosted two nights of their Bahamas wedding celebrations, after ProPublica reported that he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the events.

The couple married in May on a private island. A second island, rented at about $100,000 a night, hosted the after-parties and sleeping guests. ProPublica, citing records and three people familiar with the event, said Kremlev also paid about $70,000 for fireworks and other organising costs. The money moved through a Dubai entity linked to the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev heads. Forbes puts Trump Jr’s fortune near $300 million. He could have paid the bills himself.

An Instagram statement attributed to the couple did not deny the payments. “Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” it said. A spokesperson told ProPublica that Kremlev is “a personal friend of Don,” that they met through hunting and boxing, and that they are not in business together. Kremlev’s office said they first met a couple of years ago and that he “has never discussed political matters with any of his American friends.”

About 50 guests attended. Trump Jr had described them as “just really close friends.” ProPublica said a large Russian-speaking group was there and that some of Trump Jr’s longtime friends were not invited. Guests asked who Kremlev was. He speaks limited English. President Donald Trump stayed in Washington and did not attend.

Kremlev’s public ties to the Kremlin are not subtle. In April, Putin gave him the Order of Friendship. Days before the May wedding he was seen with Putin in China. The IBA is funded in part by Gazprom. The International Olympic Committee suspended the association, citing among other things its failure to report those energy ties.

Donald Trump Jr is a private citizen. U.S. law does not bar him from accepting a gift from a foreign national. That is the legal line his statement relies on. The political line is different. House Oversight ranking Democrat Robert Garcia asked why a Putin ally funded the Bahamas nights. Democrats already want answers on Trump Jr’s investment firm. The wedding file now sits next to that inquiry whether or not a statute was broken.

The Dubai payment path matters more than the fireworks. An IBA-linked company paying for a U.S. president’s son’s party is a paper trail that investigators can follow even if the couple call it a gift. It also puts the boxing body, already under Olympic suspension, into a U.S. political story it did not need.

Putin gains a cheap headline. A man he decorated in April is photographed as the host of the president’s eldest son. That is influence as hospitality. It does not prove a policy deal. It does show how social access is bought in cash and island nights rather than in registered lobbying.

What remains unpublished is the full invoice list, the Dubai company’s owners, and whether any other costs on the three-day schedule were covered the same way. ProPublica has the rental and fireworks numbers. The couple have confirmed the host. The rest of the ledger is the next document.
