Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured India’s first women’s doubles medal at the BWF World Championships in 15 years on 21 August 2026.
The pair, ranked 39 in the world, defeated China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in the quarter-finals at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi.
The last Indian women’s doubles medal at the event came in 2011. The result marks a breakthrough for the current generation of Indian doubles players.
Gayatri is the daughter of former national coach Pullela Gopichand. The victory was celebrated as a milestone for the national badminton programme.
Further matches will determine the colour of the medal. The achievement already stands as the first podium finish in the discipline at the world championships in more than a decade.
