Tornado Tears Through French Village of Pomas, Injuring 39

A tornado of unusual intensity struck the village of Pomas in southwestern France on the evening of August 24, injuring 39 people and damaging roughly 300 homes. Two of the injured were reported in critical condition. Authorities evacuated the entire village while structural assessments continued.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the event as a tornado of rare intensity for the Aude department. Météo-France experts estimated peak winds of 200 kilometres per hour or higher. Roofs were torn off, walls collapsed, and a medieval castle suffered partial damage to walls that had stood for centuries.

Local sub-prefect Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemarchand said about 100 of the damaged houses may no longer be habitable. More than 120 emergency workers were deployed. Approximately 2,800 households across ten villages lost electricity. No one was reported missing.

Residents described the tornado as a swirling column of red and yellow. One man said his pregnant wife was injured when their house collapsed on her. The village of roughly 1,000 people sits south of Carcassonne. The storm arrived as a period of extreme heat gave way to thunderstorms across southern France.

France records a few dozen tornadoes most years, the majority of them weak. The Pomas event stands out for the scale of structural damage relative to the size of the community. Officials noted that the precise path had been difficult to forecast even after warnings were issued.

Emergency services treated 15 people in hospital. The remainder of the injured received care on site or at local clinics. Temporary accommodation was arranged for residents unable to return to their homes. Power restoration and debris clearance were expected to take several days.

The incident adds to a summer of extreme weather across Europe that has included multiple heatwaves and intense convective storms. Insurance claims from the Pomas tornado will form part of the broader seasonal total for property damage.

Local officials emphasised that the priority remained the safety of residents still being housed elsewhere while engineers checked each building. Historical structures in the village, including the partially damaged castle, will require specialised assessment before any restoration decisions.

No broader meteorological alert remained in force for the region by the following day, but residual thunderstorms were still possible. The event is expected to feature in the annual review of severe weather by Météo-France.

For the residents of Pomas the immediate reality is damaged or destroyed housing, disrupted daily life, and the practical work of recovery. The rarity of such intense tornadoes in France does not reduce the concrete losses suffered by those whose homes stood in the path.
