Three members of one family drowned on Saturday in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, after they went to look at fields still under floodwater. Officials named them as Surendra Chauhan, 40, his son Saurabh, 13, and his nephew Shobhit, 17. Shobhit slipped into a flooded ditch. Surendra and Saurabh jumped in to pull him out. All three died.
The Indian Express reported the deaths from district officials on Saturday. The ditch was in agricultural land the family was inspecting, not in a river channel they had set out to cross. That detail is the mechanism. Standing water over a field hides the cut of an irrigation ditch. A teenager who steps onto what looks like a flat flood can drop into a trench with a current strong enough to take an adult who follows. Two rescuers entering the same water, without a rope or a third person on the bank, is how a single slip becomes three deaths.
Sitapur sits on the Ghaghara plain, north of Lucknow, in a belt where the Ghaghara, the Gomti and local drains meet. The district floods in most heavy monsoon years when the river and those drains rise together. Fields stay under water for days after the river gauge has already fallen, because the ditch network drains slowly and because canal gates are often left as they were when the water arrived. By early October the main crest has often passed, and families walk back onto plots to see what the water left. That is the errand Chauhan was on. A submerged crop is still a crop if the stalk is standing. It is also a field whose ditches no longer show.
The ages fix who was doing the checking. A 40-year-old farmer, a 13-year-old son and a 17-year-old nephew is a working party, not a group that wandered off a road. In Sitapur, boys of Shobhit's age are often the ones sent ahead to test depth with a stick. Officials did not say whether he had a stick. They did say he slipped first. The two who followed were the adults and the child who could still have stayed on the bund. Once all three were in, there was no one left on dry ground to pull a rope, to mark the point, or to run for a boat.
Uttar Pradesh has had a wet finish to the monsoon across several northern districts. Sitapur's administration had not, in the reports available on Saturday, published a district death toll for the season, so these three cannot yet be placed in a larger count. What the officials did confirm is the relationship, the ages, and the sequence: the nephew first, then the father and the son. No fourth person was reported in the water. Recovery was complete enough for the names to be issued the same day, which usually means the bodies were found close to the slip point rather than carried into a main channel.
Neighbour districts have spent the last fortnight on crop-loss memos rather than on drownings of this kind. Karnataka, on the same Saturday, put drought losses in 177 taluks at about Rs 46,000 crore. Sitapur's problem is the opposite end of the same monsoon: water that has not left the plot. A family checking a flooded field is doing the assessment a revenue officer will later do with a form. The difference is the ditch.
The practical warning from a ditch death is narrower than a flood alert. A river warning tells a village to leave. A hidden trench tells a farmer who has already returned not to step off the bund, and not to follow a relative in without a line held from dry ground. Chauhan's group did the thing families do when a boy goes under. The current did not give them a second exit. Police and district officials have not described any boat or rescue team on the plot at the time. No school or employer was named, so the public record is the family and the field.
The names are the record. Surendra Chauhan, 40. Saurabh Chauhan, 13. Shobhit, 17, his nephew. A flooded ditch in a family field in Sitapur. Three deaths, confirmed by officials on 3 October, from one slip and two attempts to undo it.
