Rescue operations ended on 14 October after a boat capsized in the Ganga in Bihar's Vaishali district, killing 13 children. All the deceased were below 15 years of age. Nine were girls. Three of the dead were sisters aged between 10 and 13. Six other people, four of them minors, were pulled from the water alive and admitted to hospital in stable condition.
The boat carried roughly 20 people from Rampur Shyamchand village. They were travelling to a nearby area for a feast on Tuesday night, according to District Magistrate Varsha Singh. An inquiry has been ordered. Examination of the recovered vessel revealed a large hole. Eyewitnesses said the boat had been provided to the flood-prone village several years earlier and had deteriorated. Overloading is also under examination. The precise cause has not been officially established.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the family of each deceased. Union Minister Chirag Paswan and Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav visited the families. The state government stated that central and state authorities are providing support.
The accident occurred in a region where river transport remains common during the post-monsoon period. The presence of a large hole in an ageing, government-supplied boat raises questions about maintenance and inspection regimes for such vessels. Thirteen of the victims belonged to the same extended family group in some accounts, concentrating the loss in one community.
No official has yet released a full technical report on the boat's structural failure or the number of passengers relative to capacity. The district magistrate confirmed the death toll and the recovery of survivors. Further details will depend on the outcome of the ordered inquiry and any forensic examination of the vessel.
For the families in Rampur Shyamchand, the immediate consequence is the loss of 13 children on a routine evening journey. The announced compensation and the inquiry provide the formal response. Whether the findings lead to changes in the inspection of rural boats in flood-prone districts will determine if similar risks are reduced.
