The Pitt and Widow's Bay split the 78th Emmys as Seehorn and Wyle win leads

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, handed out in Los Angeles on Monday 14 September, split the two series prizes between a hospital drama and a horror comedy. The Pitt won outstanding drama. Widow's Bay won outstanding comedy. CNN counted six Emmys for Widow's Bay on the main night. Channels TV, tallying the Creative Arts show as well, put the comedy's haul at 14, which it called a single-year record for a comedy series.

Noah Wyle won lead actor in a drama for The Pitt, beating Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Mark Ruffalo (Task) and Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat). Rhea Seehorn won lead actress in a drama for Pluribus, ahead of Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Chase Infiniti (The Testaments), Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Zendaya (Euphoria). Matthew Rhys won lead comedy actor for Widow's Bay. Jean Smart won lead comedy actress for Hacks.

What the series prizes actually rewarded

The Pitt is a shift-by-shift emergency-room show. Its formal bet is duration: long takes, overlapping triage, a clock that does not cut away when a procedure is ugly. Giving it drama series over The Diplomat, Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, Paradise, Pluribus, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Your Friends & Neighbors is a vote for that method rather than for spy craft or period furniture. Wyle's win is of a piece with that vote. The performance the Academy named is the one that holds a trauma bay without arias.

Widow's Bay works in the opposite register. It is a horror comedy. Its win over The Bear, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, Nobody Wants This and Margo's Got Money Troubles says the room was willing to treat dread and jokes as a single form, not as a drama that happens to be funny. Rhys's lead prize and the supporting comedy actress win for Kate O'Flynn, reported by the BBC, sit inside that same choice. The show did not sneak in through a technical category. It took the series prize and the lead.

Pluribus did not take drama series. Seehorn still took the actress prize. That split is common when voters like a performance more than they like the machine around it. Hacks did not take comedy series. Smart still took the actress prize, her latest in a run that has made the show a delivery system for one part. Limited series went to DTF St. Louis, over All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, Beef and Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.

The field the winners had to cross

Drama actor was a heavy list. Oldman has already been the Academy's idea of spy craft. Brown's Paradise work is a different temperature. Ruffalo's Task is a crime lead. The vote for Wyle is a vote against that kind of prestige default. Drama actress put Zendaya's Euphoria and Russell's Diplomat in the same row as Seehorn. Comedy actor put Martin Short and Jason Segel next to Rhys and Steve Carell's Rooster. None of those lists was a soft field.

Creative Arts prizes had already been given earlier in the month, which is why Monday's telecast could look sparse in the craft categories and dense in the faces. That split is now the Emmy calendar. It also inflates headline totals. Widow's Bay's 14, if the combined count holds, includes work most viewers never see announced on the main night. The six that CNN counted on Monday are the ones that will travel in the morning papers.

What the night does not settle

A series win does not keep a show on air and does not fix a later season. The Pitt now has to show that the long-take ER can survive a second cycle of voter fatigue. Widow's Bay has to show that horror-comedy is a form it can repeat, not a one-year tone. Seehorn's Pluribus win puts a demand on that series to grow a structure as distinctive as its lead. Smart's Hacks win puts no new demand on Hacks. It confirms a part the Academy already likes.

The useful list from Monday is short: Pitt for drama, Widow's Bay for comedy, DTF St. Louis for limited, Wyle, Seehorn, Rhys, Smart. The rest of the ballot is how those four shows and four parts had to earn the room.
