Tarun Tejpal surrenders in Mapusa and is taken to Colvale jail

Tarun Tejpal surrendered before the Additional Sessions Court at Mapusa on Monday and was taken to Central Jail at Colvale in North Goa to begin a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in a 2013 sexual assault case.

Outside the court he told reporters, "I just want to say that we are in the Supreme Court and we are sure that justice will come." In a second remark he said he would approach the Supreme Court again and was confident of relief there.

The surrender followed an 25 August order from a Supreme Court bench of Justice Alok Aradhe. The court dismissed Tejpal's plea for exemption from surrender and said his criminal appeal would be listed on 22 September only if a surrender certificate reached the registry by 21 September. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal had argued that the age of the case and time already spent in custody justified a stay. The bench refused.

From acquittal to conviction

A Goa sessions court acquitted Tejpal of all charges in May 2021. The judge wrote that the complainant "did not demonstrate any kind of normative behaviour" a victim of sexual assault "might plausibly show." The Goa government appealed.

On 6 August 2026 a division bench of the Bombay High Court at Goa, Justices Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar, overturned that acquittal. The bench convicted Tejpal under Section 376(2)(f) of the Indian Penal Code, rape by a person in a position of trust or authority, and under Sections 354A and 354B, sexual harassment and assault with intent to disrobe. It sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and gave him a window to surrender. He used that window to go to the Supreme Court instead.

The case concerns events on 7 and 8 November 2013. A junior colleague at Tehelka accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator in Goa during a magazine event. He was first arrested on 30 November 2013. He has always denied the charges.

The Goa government has also gone to the Supreme Court. It wants the 10-year term replaced with life imprisonment. That petition sits alongside Tejpal's own appeal against conviction.

What Monday changed

Until Monday Tejpal was a convicted appellant who had not yet entered prison under the High Court sentence. From Monday afternoon he is a serving prisoner whose lawyers must file a surrender certificate if they want the 22 September listing. The certificate is a clerical document with legal weight. Without it the appeal stays off the board.

Colvale Central Jail is the destination the Mapusa court named after the surrender. Police confirmed he was moved there the same day. The 62-year-old former editor-in-chief of Tehelka built his public reputation on sting journalism in the 2000s. That history does not bear on the conviction. It does explain why the surrender drew cameras outside a North Goa court on a Monday.

The next date that matters

21 September is the filing deadline. 22 September is the hearing date the Supreme Court already wrote into its order, subject to that filing. The bench will then decide whether to suspend the sentence pending appeal, to hear the conviction on merits, or to take some narrower step.

None of those options is guaranteed by the fact of surrender. The August order made custody a condition of being heard, not a promise of relief. Tejpal's statement outside court treated the Supreme Court as the forum that will settle the case. That is the correct forum. It is not yet a result.

The complainant has not been named in public coverage, in line with Indian law on sexual offence cases. The High Court judgment is the document that now governs his status until a higher court says otherwise.
