Tarun Tejpal Ordered to Surrender Within Two Weeks in 2013 Rape Case

The Supreme Court of India on 25 August 2026 directed journalist Tarun Tejpal to surrender within two weeks in connection with his 2013 rape conviction.

A single-judge bench of Justice Alok Aradhe ordered that the appeal against the conviction and 10-year sentence will be heard only after a certificate of surrender is filed on or before 22 September 2026.

Tejpal, former editor of Tehelka magazine, was convicted by a Goa court in the case involving a junior colleague. He has remained free on bail pending the appeal process.

The court rejected his plea to remain out of custody while the appeal is pending. The surrender directive is a condition for the higher court to take up the merits of the challenge.

Tejpal’s legal team has indicated it will comply with the order. The case has been a long-running matter in Indian courts, with multiple hearings on procedural and evidentiary issues.

Once the surrender certificate is filed, the Supreme Court will schedule arguments on the conviction itself. The trial court had found the prosecution evidence sufficient to sustain the charges.

The order brings the criminal proceedings closer to a final appellate determination more than a decade after the original complaint.
