The Tamil Nadu government has decided to drop plans for a new greenfield airport at Parandur following sustained resistance from local villagers.
The project was estimated at ₹27,400 crore. It was intended to ease pressure on Chennai International Airport and support industrial growth in the region. Land acquisition had become a major point of contention, with residents arguing that fertile agricultural land and livelihoods were at risk.
Officials said the government is now examining alternative locations that would minimise displacement and environmental impact. No new site has been finalised.
The decision comes after extensive consultations and reflects the political sensitivity of large infrastructure projects that require substantial private land. Similar resistance has delayed or altered other airport and industrial corridor proposals across the country in recent years.
Aviation planners note that southern India continues to need additional airport capacity as passenger and cargo traffic grows. The search for a viable alternative is expected to continue in the coming months.
