Swiggy said on Thursday that Food on Train now reaches 201 railway stations, up from 66 in August 2024, and that orders on the service have grown twelve times in those two years. Adoption in tier-2 and tier-3 markets is rising twice as fast as in metros. The product launched in March 2024. New stops on the latest list include Kolhapur, Wardha, Shahdol, Kakinada, Bharatpur, Chittoor, Thanjavur, Raigarh, Jamnagar, Indore and Tundla.
Two features arrived with the count. Search by Train lets a passenger type a train number or name and see kitchens mapped to that rake's timetable, instead of browsing restaurants as if the user were on a sofa. A ₹99 Store widget points to cheaper meals. Sidharth Bhakoo, chief business officer for Swiggy Food Marketplace, called the train a new consumption occasion and said travellers use it to find regional food as well as to fill a gap between pantry cars.
The order mix is specific. Full meals, mostly thalis, are more than 65 percent of train orders. Lassi orders are up 60 percent year on year, buttermilk 40 percent, mojitos 90 percent. Carbonated drinks are down. Sweets are up 110 percent, led by rasgulla. Station lists read like a map of local pride: pyaz kachori is the single top seller at Jaipur Junction, poha sits in Bhopal's breakfast top ten, biryani variants lead in southern and central stations and share Lucknow with Tunday galouti kebabs.
IRCTC already runs Food on Track. Swiggy is not replacing that channel. It is adding restaurant inventory at a scale the older platform did not reach in smaller junctions. Two hundred and one stations still leave most of the 7,000-odd railway stations off the map. The useful comparison is not with the whole network. It is with the 66-station base of 2024 and with the passenger who used to step onto a platform for a five-minute dash to a stall.
Timing is the operational risk. A train does not wait for a rider who is stuck at a level crossing. Swiggy has to hit a window measured in minutes at a platform it does not control. The Search by Train tool is an attempt to make that window visible before the rake arrives. If the twelve-fold growth holds, the constraint will shift from demand to kitchen density at junctions where only two or three vendors can plate a thali in time.
For the railways the service is free advertising for long-distance travel. For Swiggy it is a way to use idle kitchen capacity in towns that do not generate dinner peaks like a metro. The ₹99 widget is a bet that the same passenger who will pay for a galouti kebab in Lucknow will also buy a cheap meal at Shahdol. Both can be true. The 201-station list is how we will find out which one pays the delivery partner.
