Sweden's election sits on a single seat as the Sweden Democrats fall

Swedes voted on 13 September for all 349 seats in the Riksdag. By late evening the opposition bloc around Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson stood on 175 seats. The governing right around prime minister Ulf Kristersson stood on 174. Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, a political scientist at the University of Gothenburg, called it "a completely unlikely result with a majority of one seat for the opposition," and warned that the lead could still move.

The election authority's partial count, covering 4,853 of 6,312 districts in one widely cited snapshot, produced the same one-seat gap. A running tally at about 80 percent of the vote put the Social Democrats near 28.1 percent, the Moderates near 19.9 percent and the Sweden Democrats near 17.6 percent. Those shares are preliminary. Postal and overseas ballots remain. Swedish counts often take days to settle when the margin is this thin.

The party picture inside the blocs is clearer than the final seat map. Andersson's Social Democrats stayed the largest party and lost ground from 30.3 percent in 2022. Kristersson's Moderates held or slightly improved. The Sweden Democrats, who had risen at every election since entering the Riksdag, fell for the first time in that sequence, to the mid-17s from 20.5 percent in 2022. The Left, Centre, Greens, Christian Democrats and Liberals all moved by a point or less. Smaller parties rose as the large ones slipped.

Kristersson has governed since October 2022 under the Tido agreement: Moderates, Christian Democrats and Liberals in cabinet, Sweden Democrats supplying votes from outside. He had said that a second term would bring the Sweden Democrats into government. A one-seat defeat would block that, and would return Andersson, who was prime minister in 2021-22, to Rosenbad if she can hold Centre and the Greens.

The campaign turned on crime, migration and the cost of living. Kristersson's record is a harder line on asylum and gang violence. Andersson argued that the Tido years had not delivered safety and had pulled Sweden away from its older social model. Neither side proposed leaving NATO or cutting support for Ukraine. Foreign policy is not the hinge. Migration policy is.

Because 175 is exactly half of 349 plus one, a single constituency recount or a late overseas batch can flip the chamber. Sweden does not have a two-round runoff. The speaker tests who can command a majority. If the count stays 175-174, Andersson can try to form a government that includes or relies on the Centre Party. If it flips, Kristersson can try to keep Tido and invite Jimmie Akesson's Sweden Democrats into formal coalition, the step he promised.

Oscarsson's warning still holds on the morning of 14 September. The night map is a one-seat story. The certified map is not yet printed. Party headquarters in Stockholm will spend the next days watching district spreadsheets, not writing coalition contracts. The first durable fact is already visible: the Sweden Democrats' long rise paused, and the bloc arithmetic collapsed to a single seat.

Sweden's system makes a one-seat lead usable. There is no separate presidential race. The prime minister is the person who can survive a speaker's vote in a 349-member chamber. Andersson does not need 175 of her own party. She needs 175 from a bloc that includes the Left, the Greens and, if she can keep it, the Centre. Kristersson's path runs through the Sweden Democrats. He said before polling day that he would bring them into cabinet. That promise is now either the price of a second term or the reason a second term slips.

Overseas ballots have moved Swedish results before. The authority will keep counting through the week. Party lawyers will watch the districts where the Sweden Democrats underperformed their 2022 share, because that underperformance is the main reason the right is on 174 rather than 180. Until the certified sheet is posted, the honest description is the one Oscarsson gave on the night: a majority of one, and it can still move.
