South Korea's 2026 exports pass last year's record by 5 September, on a $1 trillion path
Customs put cumulative shipments at $709.4 billion as of 1 p.m. Saturday, $100 million above the 2025 annual mark. Semiconductors were $281 billion in eight months, up 169.6 percent, and 41 percent of the total.

South Korea's exports reached $709.4 billion by 1 p.m. on Saturday, 5 September, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and the Korea Customs Service. That figure is $100 million above the full-year record of $709.3 billion set in 2025. The mark was passed 117 days earlier than last year's total was completed. President Lee Jae Myung posted the customs commissioner's report the same day.
If the present pace holds, the customs chief said, annual exports could hit $1 trillion around early December. Only the United States, China and Germany have crossed that line so far. Lee's post repeated that projection. The customs office said shipments were still rising "even amid an uncertain trade environment due to strengthened protectionism, global supply chain restructuring and the Middle East situation."
Semiconductors did the heavy work. From January to August, chip exports rose 169.6 percent to about $281 billion, or 41 percent of all goods sold abroad. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are selling into an AI memory shortage that has lifted prices. Monthly semiconductor exports dipped to $41.2 billion in July from $44.9 billion in June, then rose to $46.8 billion in August, an all-time high for a single month. Computer peripherals jumped 266.2 percent to $33.6 billion in the first eight months. Wireless devices rose 28.1 percent to $13.1 billion. Ships rose 12.4 percent to $20.7 billion. Petroleum products and steel also grew.
Passenger cars, still the second item after chips, fell 4 percent in the same eight months. That decline did not offset the chip boom. Exports to China, the largest destination, rose 76 percent. Shipments to the United States rose 57 percent. Goods other than semiconductors still grew 18 percent to $412.1 billion. The Bank of Korea has lifted its 2026 growth forecast to 3.3 percent on the back of the same numbers.
The won has strengthened by more than 200 won per dollar in two months as exporters convert receipts. A third straight annual export record is now the base case, after $683.6 billion in 2024 and $709.3 billion in 2025. The 2022-2023 slump, when totals fell to $632.2 billion, is the comparison officials want in the room.
A $1 trillion year would be a political prize for Lee and a concentration risk for the economy. Four-tenths of exports in one product family means a soft quarter in AI servers would show up in the trade account at once. Cars are already shrinking. The Middle East war has not stopped the ships, but it has raised the freight and insurance line. Customs is counting on the next three months looking like the last eight. December will say whether $1 trillion was a forecast or a near miss.
For now the verified fact is simpler. On a Saturday in early September, before the year is three-quarters done, South Korea had already sold more goods abroad than it did in all of 2025. The chips did it.
