South Korea's exports reached $709.4 billion by 1 p.m. on Saturday, 5 September, according to the Korea Customs Service and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. That figure is $100 million above the entire calendar year of 2025, when exports set a record at $709.3 billion. The new mark arrived 117 days before the year ends.
Customs Commissioner Lee Jong-wook told President Lee Jae Myung that if the present pace holds, annual exports could hit $1 trillion around early December. Only the United States, China and Germany have crossed that line. Lee Jae Myung posted the briefing on X.
The engine is memory chips. From January to August, semiconductor exports rose 169.6 percent to $281.2 billion and accounted for 40.6 to 41 percent of all shipments. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are selling into an AI-driven shortage that has lifted chip prices. Monthly semiconductor exports set a record in August at $46.8 billion after $44.9 billion in June and $41.2 billion in July.
The rest of the crate
Exports excluding semiconductors still grew 18 percent to $412.1 billion in the first eight months. Computer peripherals jumped 262 to 266 percent to about $33.6 billion. Petroleum products rose about 41 percent to $42.6 billion. Wireless devices rose 28.1 percent to $13.1 billion. Ships rose 12.4 percent to $20.7 billion. Steel rose 7.4 percent. Passenger cars, the second-largest item, fell 4 percent. Autos still contributed $43.6 billion through August.
By market, China rose 76.1 percent, the United States 57 percent, Vietnam 57.7 percent and the European Union 19 percent. The Middle East fell 9.8 percent, the one large region moving the other way while the Iran war and tanker risk sit on the same routes.
The won has strengthened by more than 200 won per dollar over two months as exporters converted large dollar receipts. That appreciation will cut won earnings even if dollar invoices keep rising. The Bank of Korea has already lifted its 2026 growth forecast to 3.3 percent on the back of the chip boom.
A record with a narrow base
Korea's export path since 2022 has been jagged: $683.6 billion that year, $632.2 billion in 2023, $683.6 billion again in 2024, then $709.3 billion in 2025. This year every month from January beat the same month a year earlier, and June crossed $100 billion in a single month for the first time.
A $1 trillion year would be a political prize for Lee Jae Myung. It would also leave the economy more exposed to a single product cycle. If AI server demand cools, or if buyers delay memory orders, more than two-fifths of the export book moves with it. Cars are already shrinking. The Middle East is already shrinking. The customs office can celebrate Saturday's print. The structure underneath it is thinner than the headline.
