The Social Security Administration announced on 14 October 2026 that benefits will increase by 3.6 percent in 2027.
Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the adjustment starting with January payments. About 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients will see the increase from 31 December 2026. Some people receive both. The average retirement benefit will rise by roughly 75 dollars a month.
The figure is the largest cost-of-living adjustment since 2023. It follows a 2.8 percent increase for 2026. The adjustment is calculated from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. The average of the July, August and September readings produced the 3.6 percent result. September CPI-W rose 3.9 percent year over year.
Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the adjustment would give greater financial stability to 76 million Americans. The taxable maximum earnings subject to Social Security tax will rise from 184,500 dollars to 192,300 dollars in 2027. Earnings limits for those below full retirement age will also increase.
Part of the COLA will be offset for many retirees by higher Medicare Part B premiums. The trustees have projected a 6.60 dollar monthly increase to 209.50 dollars. Final premium figures are due later this year. Net gains for most beneficiaries are still expected to exceed 3 percent.
The higher adjustment reflects elevated inflation driven largely by energy prices. The Iran conflict and reduced Russian refined-product exports have kept gasoline and diesel costs high. Broader CPI rose 3.7 percent in the year to September. Energy alone climbed 20.4 percent over the same period.
Social Security's trust-fund insolvency date remains a longer-term concern. The 3.6 percent increase adds to annual outlays at a time when the program already faces projected shortfalls in the next decade. The formula that sets the COLA is fixed by statute and is not adjusted for the narrower spending patterns of retirees.
Beneficiaries can view individual notices in their my Social Security accounts from late November. The increase applies automatically. No action is required from recipients.
For the average retired worker the new monthly amount will be approximately 2,170 dollars. Couples both receiving benefits will see a larger absolute rise. The adjustment arrives as households continue to manage higher fuel and food costs that have persisted through 2026.
