Singapore Records Highest 2026 Air Pollution Reading as Indonesian Wildfire Haze Spreads
One-hour PM2.5 concentrations reached about 288 micrograms per cubic metre on 14 October. Timor-Leste suspended in-person classes for three days because of the same regional haze.

Singapore recorded its highest air pollution level of 2026 on 14 October as haze from Indonesian wildfires pushed one-hour PM2.5 concentrations to about 288 micrograms per cubic metre.
The reading exceeded previous peaks for the year and triggered health advisories. PM2.5 particles, small enough to enter the bloodstream, are linked to respiratory and cardiovascular strain. Singapore’s National Environment Agency monitors the pollutant continuously. The spike coincided with visible haze and reduced visibility in parts of the island.
The haze originates from peat and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Dry conditions and agricultural burning practices accelerate the spread of smoke across the Malacca Strait and into the South China Sea. Prevailing winds carried the plume toward Singapore and parts of Malaysia on 13 and 14 October. Similar transboundary episodes have occurred in most dry seasons, though intensity varies with rainfall and fire-management efforts in Indonesia.
Timor-Leste suspended in-person classes nationwide from 15 to 17 October after air quality deteriorated from the same regional smoke. Schools shifted to remote or suspended instruction while outdoor activities were curtailed. Other Southeast Asian governments issued public warnings and distributed masks in affected districts.
Indonesian authorities have deployed additional firefighting teams and cloud-seeding aircraft in the most active provinces. Enforcement against illegal burning remains uneven, particularly on plantation land. Regional cooperation under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution provides a framework for information sharing and assistance, yet annual recurrence shows the limits of current prevention measures.
For Singapore, the 288 microgram reading places the air in the unhealthy range for all groups. Sensitive individuals, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing lung or heart conditions, are advised to remain indoors and use air purifiers. The duration of the episode will depend on wind shifts and the success of fire suppression in Indonesia. Historical data show that multi-day peaks are common when fires are widespread.
The simultaneous class suspension in Timor-Leste illustrates how the same smoke plume affects multiple countries at different stages of development and with different institutional capacities. Monitoring stations across the region continue to report elevated readings on 14 October.
