The Sikkim government has set up a task force to find and help state residents caught in the Nepal flash floods. An official confirmed the move on Friday, 28 August, citing a notification issued on Thursday. Prabhakar Rai, director of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, is the chair. The group is to work with the Centre, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and other agencies, collect names, and speak to families.
The notification lists the categories the desk must verify: missing, stranded, injured, dead, or otherwise affected. It also tells the desk to pass only checked information back to relatives. That last line is the operational point. After a border disaster, unofficial lists move faster than confirmed ones. Sikkim sits on the same Himalayan chain as the Bhote Koshi basin. Residents travel into Nepal for work, pilgrimage and trade. A state-level list is how Gangtok keeps those names from dissolving into the larger Indian missing count that the Ministry of External Affairs has been updating from Delhi.
Nepal’s own figures have kept rising. Police put the death toll at 469 on Friday in one briefing and at 579 in later national tallies. Search teams numbered 7,451, including 2,391 from the Nepal Army. Rescuers said 1,545 injured or stranded people had been brought out, with 84 in Kathmandu hospitals. Those are Nepal’s numbers. Sikkim’s task force does not replace them. It filters them for people who hold a Sikkim address.
India has already flown relief into Kathmandu and received some rescued pilgrims in Delhi. Jaishankar met a Tamil Nadu group at the airport. The Sikkim order is a different instrument. It is a state desk with a named officer, a verification mandate and a family-liaison duty. It does not send searchers across the border. It tries to stop a second problem: families in Gangtok and Namchi living on rumours while the embassy and the MEA work a national list.
Whether the desk publishes a running count is not in the Friday briefing. What is in the briefing is the chair, the partners and the job. For a small state with a long open border, that is the piece that was missing from the first 48 hours of the flood file.
