Shubman Gill was named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2026, his fifth such award and a record for the men’s category. He finished ahead of India’s Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza. Opener Shafali Verma received the women’s award for the second time, after strong performances in the Asia Cup and Asian Games.
Gill scored 110 off 108 balls in the first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September, helping India chase 296 in 41.4 overs. Three days later in Guwahati, West Indies posted 405/7, their first ODI total above 400. Gill, captaining, replied with an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls that included 26 fours and eight sixes. India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs with 39 balls remaining. His century came in 62 balls, the fastest by an Indian captain in ODIs, and his double century in 117 balls, the fastest in ODI history. India won the three-match series 2-1.
Gill’s previous monthly awards came in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025 and July 2025. He now equals the overall record held by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who also has five. Gill said the recognition felt fantastic and that scoring in successful home chases added to the satisfaction. He noted that ODI cricket has accelerated and that batters must assess conditions and targets quickly.
The award recognises a concrete statistical outlier: the fastest double century in the format, scored in a chase of more than 400. It also consolidates Gill’s position as the men’s player with the most monthly honours since the ICC introduced the prize in 2021. Verma’s parallel recognition underlines the depth of India’s current white-ball form across both teams.
