Shakti Sharma becomes the first woman non-medical two-star officer in the services
The Education Branch officer commissioned in June 1994 took charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) on 1 September. She had already been the first woman from the three services to run a Sainik School.

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September 2026. The Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force both recorded the same fact that had been missing from the services for 79 years after Independence: a woman officer from a non-medical branch now holds two-star rank.
She was an Air Commodore until that morning. The new rank is the IAF equivalent of a Major General in the Army and a Rear Admiral in the Navy. Medical officers, including women, have reached two-star rank before. Combat and support branches had not produced a woman at that level until Sharma's promotion.
The IAF posted the announcement on its official handle the same day. The Press Information Bureau issued a separate note under the Defence Ministry. Both texts named the appointment, the date and the Education Branch commission of 18 June 1994. They also named the two academic chairs she set up and the Sainik School she later ran.
Sharma's first posting after commission sat inside the training system. Over three decades she moved through field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters. The ministry's note lists the IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and at Pune University as her work. Those chairs were designed to keep serving officers in contact with civilian research groups on strategy and technology. That is a narrower claim than the usual language about women in uniform. It is also checkable.
The second first on her file is older than the star. She became the first woman officer from the Army, Navy or Air Force to command a Sainik School when she took over as principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala, in Punjab. Sainik Schools feed the National Defence Academy and the other officer academies. The principal is a command appointment, not a ceremonial one. That posting is the piece of her record that most closely resembles line command.
Women were first commissioned as short-service officers in the IAF in 1992. Sharma arrived two years later in the Education Branch, a cadre that handles training doctrine, examinations, language and the academic pipeline rather than flying or engineering. Permanent commission for women in several branches followed much later, after court orders in 2020 and 2021 opened command opportunities that had been closed by policy. Two-star rank still sat above that fight. The medical services had their own promotion ladder. The rest of the force did not.
The timing of the announcement matters for a second reason. The three services have spent the last four years arguing, in courts and in internal boards, over how far women can go in command. The Supreme Court judgments on permanent commission did not automatically produce two-star officers. Boards still had to clear them. Sharma's file cleared. The ministry chose to say so in public on the day she sat in the new chair.
Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) is a staff job at Vayu Bhawan. It does not put her over a flying station or a command. It does put her over the IAF's training and education staff and over the relationships those staff keep with universities and Sainik Schools. That is the lane she has worked in since 1994. The promotion does not rewrite flying policy. It does change who sits at the table when the IAF discusses how officers are taught.
Numbers around women in the IAF remain small relative to the total officer strength. The service has steadily increased the share of women in flying, administration and accounts, but two-star rank is still a short list. Sharma is now on it. The next test is whether other non-medical branches follow with their own boards, and whether the Army and Navy produce equivalent names without waiting another generation.
For now the record is specific. Commissioned 18 June 1994. Principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala. Chairs at IIT Kanpur and Pune University. Promoted from Air Commodore. Took over as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) on 1 September 2026. First woman non-medical officer in the Indian armed forces to hold Air Vice Marshal or equivalent rank. That is the file the IAF put on the public record.
