Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September. The Defence Ministry said she is the first woman officer from a non-medical branch in the Indian armed forces to reach Air Vice Marshal or the equivalent two-star rank.
Women in the Army and Navy have so far reached Colonel and its equivalents in the non-medical streams. In the medical stream, Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay had already held two-star rank. Sharma's promotion is the first time a woman from education, logistics, accounts or the other non-medical branches has crossed that line in any of the three services.
Thirty-two years in the Education Branch
Sharma was commissioned on 18 June 1994. She has served at training units, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters. The ministry statement lists two institutional projects by name: the IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and at Pune University, set up to tie service education to campus research. She also became the first woman officer from the three services to command a Sainik School, as principal of Sainik School Kapurthala.
The IAF opened Permanent Commission to women officers in 2010. That change is why a 1994 education-branch commission could still be in service, and in the two-star band, in 2026. Short-service paths that ended at 10 or 14 years would not have produced this rank on this timeline.
What the new post actually runs
Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) is not a flying command. It owns training doctrine, academic partnerships, and the schools and courses that sit under Air Headquarters. Sharma arrives there after running a Sainik School, which is a different kind of command: teenage cadets, a state campus, and a public examination calendar. The ministry is presenting that sequence as the point. A woman officer has now held both a tri-service school command and a two-star staff seat.
The glass that remains is operational two-star command in flying and combat support. This appointment does not break that one. It does set a rank precedent that Army and Navy promotion boards will be asked to explain when the next woman colonel comes up for one-star and two-star in those services.
