Seven workers died and 22 were injured in a head-on collision between a camper van and a truck around 3 a.m. on Friday on the road into Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat's Kutch district. Police said everyone in the van was a worker at the park. The crash happened past the checkpost on the road that leads into the site. One vehicle ended up on top of the other. Officers posted at the park called a crane to pull them apart before the bodies could be taken out.
Sub-inspector M. B. Chavda, of the Dhordo and Khavda police stations, said the injured were shifted to G K General Hospital in Bhuj. Bhuj is about 136 kilometres from the park. The park itself sits about 30 kilometres from the India-Pakistan border. Vikas Sunday, superintendent of police for Kutch West, told reporters at the hospital that the collision was on the approach road past the checkpost, and that the crane was arranged by the police already posted at the park. No arrest was mentioned in the Friday account.
The distance is the operational fact. A crash at 3 a.m. on a border-district road, with the nearest general hospital 136 kilometres away, means the first hour is a local problem. The park has a police post. It does not, on the facts published today, have a trauma centre that can take seven dead and 22 injured. The transfer to Bhuj is a two-hour drive in clear conditions, longer if the same road is blocked by the wreck. Sunday's account puts the crane on site before the vehicles were separated. That sequence, crane then retrieval, is why the toll was still being stated as seven and 22 at midday rather than as a final figure from a mortuary closer to the road.
Khavda is a shift site. Workers move in campers and buses because the park is far from Bhuj and farther from the cities the contractors recruit from. A camper on the approach road at 3 a.m. is a shift change or a night movement, not a tourist van. A truck on the same road at that hour is project traffic: turbine parts, cable drums, aggregate. The police have not said which vehicle crossed the centre line. They have said the impact was head-on and that one vehicle toppled onto the other. That pattern, on a road past a checkpost, is a single-carriageway problem. A divided approach would have made this crash a run-off, not a head-on.
The checkpost matters for a second reason. Vehicles entering the park are already being stopped and logged. A crash past that point is inside the controlled approach, not on the open highway from Bhuj. The police post that supplied the crane is the same post that watches that gate. Friday's deaths happened inside a perimeter the state already staffs, on a road the project uses every night.
The injury count of 22, against seven dead, will move. Some of the injured had been on the road for the time it took to bring a crane, separate the vehicles and start the run to Bhuj. G K General Hospital is the receiving centre for West Kutch trauma. It is not a specialist burns or neurosurgery unit. Any patient who needs either will face a further transfer, to Ahmedabad or Rajkot, on top of the 136 kilometres already travelled.
What is fixed this afternoon is the place, the hour and the toll as police gave it. Seven dead, 22 injured, all workers at the park, on the road past the Khavda checkpost, at about 3 a.m. The crane came from the park post. The hospital is in Bhuj. The cause, the driver, and the condition of the 22 are not yet in the public record.
