The BSE Sensex rose 1,109.10 points, or 1.54 percent, to close at 73,033.78 on 13 October 2026. The Nifty 50 gained 358.60 points, or 1.60 percent, to end at 22,721.95. Both indices posted their strongest single-day gains in several months. Total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies increased by roughly ₹4.58 lakh crore in the session.
Information technology shares led the advance. The Nifty IT index rose 5.22 percent. HCL Technologies climbed 8.28 percent after reporting consolidated net profit of ₹5,132 crore for the July-September quarter of FY27, a 21.18 percent year-on-year increase. Tata Consultancy Services gained 6.59 percent, Tech Mahindra 4.90 percent and Infosys 4.44 percent. The rally followed the HCLTech numbers and earlier TCS results that included growth in artificial-intelligence-related revenue.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated openness to discussions on long-term capital gains tax and the securities transaction tax. Market participants treated the remarks as a signal that the government was willing to hear views ahead of budget deliberations. Buying was broad-based across financials, FMCG and realty as well as technology. The rupee recovered modestly during the day.
The session reversed losses from the previous trading day. Intraday, the Sensex reached 73,045.67. Broader indices also finished higher, with mid-caps up about 1 percent. Pharma was among the weaker sectors. Investors now turn to the next batch of quarterly results due on 14 October.
The concrete drivers visible in the data are the HCLTech profit figure, the sectoral IT index move and the close near session highs. The tax-talk comments supplied an additional sentiment factor whose effect on actual policy remains to be seen.
