Sensex falls 555 points as Brent holds near $97.50
The BSE index closed at 75,577.58. Nifty 50 ended at 23,635.10. Crude, Fed-rate nerves and the U.S.-Iran fight kept buyers away for a second session.

The BSE Sensex closed 555.23 points, or 0.73 percent, lower at 75,577.58 on Tuesday, 8 September. The NSE Nifty 50 fell 144.05 points, or 0.61 percent, to 23,635.10. It was the second down session. The open had already been weak. Sensex dropped 278.64 points at the start to 75,854.17. Nifty slipped 36.05 points to 23,743.10.
Brent crude gained $0.36, or 0.37 percent, to $97.52 a barrel during the Indian morning. U.S. crude rose $0.41 to $92.95. Gold advanced $28.98, or 0.66 percent, to $4,433.96 an ounce. Those three prints explain most of the tape. A six-month war around Iran has kept Hormuz flows thin. Houthi strikes on southern Saudi energy sites on Tuesday added another risk to the same complex. Indian refiners pay that bill in rupees.
Nifty’s top gainers included Bharat Electronics and Hindustan Unilever. SBI Life and ICICI Bank led the losers. Nifty Bank fell 0.54 percent, with ICICI Bank and Axis Bank heavy. Nifty Midcap 100 was flat. Hindustan Petroleum and 360 ONE lagged. GV T&D and Laurus Labs rose. Ajay Bagga, a market commentator, said the headline indices have gone two years without a lasting advance and that the market is directionless.
Traders also watched the U.S. Federal Reserve. Rate-cut hopes have faded as oil and the Gulf fight keep inflation sticky. Indian equities opened to that mix and never recovered. Foreign and domestic institutions were not broken out in the first closing notes. The cash market breadth was negative. Banks and energy names tied to imported crude set the tone.
Gold at $4,434 is the other side of the same day. Money that left Nifty did not have to travel far. A barrel of Brent near $97.50 is high enough to hit airline stocks, paint stocks and any company whose freight bill is dollar-priced. It is not yet $100. Tuesday’s Saudi fires and Iran’s promised Gulf zone are the events that could push it there. The Sensex close is the local receipt.
