The Sensex closed 547.65 points, or 0.76 percent, lower at 71,924.68 on Monday, while the Nifty 50 settled 157.10 points, or 0.70 percent, down at 22,363.35. The decline reversed early gains and reflected broad-based selling across most sectors.
ITC fell 3.23 percent and Tech Mahindra dropped 3.10 percent, leading the losses among Nifty constituents. Hindustan Unilever slipped 2.10 percent, Larsen & Toubro lost 1.87 percent and State Bank of India declined 1.78 percent. On the gaining side, Bharat Electronics rose 1.38 percent, Mahindra & Mahindra added 0.84 percent, Kotak Mahindra Bank advanced 0.66 percent and HCL Technologies gained 0.47 percent.
Auto, media and realty stocks finished higher as a group, while FMCG, information technology and public-sector banks lagged. The session opened with modest gains before selling pressure intensified in the afternoon. Traders cited a combination of global cues, including elevated oil prices linked to Middle East tensions, and domestic profit-taking after recent advances.
The Nifty’s close below 22,400 places it near technical levels that some desks had flagged as short-term support. Volume was moderate rather than panicked, suggesting the move was more a rotation out of recent winners than a broad liquidation. Foreign institutional investor data for the session had not been fully compiled by the close, but provisional figures indicated net selling in the cash segment.
Brent crude trading above $105 a barrel added to caution among investors sensitive to India’s import bill. Higher energy costs can pressure margins for airlines, paint makers and other downstream users while also complicating the Reserve Bank of India’s inflation outlook. Domestic institutional investors provided some offsetting bids in select large-cap names, limiting the index decline.
Sector performance showed divergence. Realty stocks benefited from continued interest in residential demand data released earlier in the month. Media names gained on expectations around advertising spends heading into the festival season. In contrast, FMCG companies faced selling after several had rallied on rural-consumption narratives. IT stocks tracked weakness in US technology indices and concerns over discretionary spending by clients.
Among individual movers, the decline in ITC extended a multi-session pullback after the stock had reached multi-year highs. Tech Mahindra’s drop coincided with broader weakness in mid-tier IT names. Banking stocks were mixed: private-sector lenders held up better than their public-sector counterparts, with SBI among the notable laggards.
The broader market was weaker than the benchmarks. Mid-cap and small-cap indices underperformed, indicating that the selling was not confined to the largest stocks. Advance-decline ratios on the NSE finished negative. Volatility, as measured by the India VIX, edged higher but remained within the range seen over the past month.
Looking ahead, investors will watch US inflation data, further developments in the Middle East energy situation, and domestic corporate results that begin in earnest later in the week. The Nifty’s ability to hold above 22,300 will be the near-term technical reference. A sustained move below that level would open the possibility of a deeper retracement toward the 22,000 area.
Monday’s session therefore closed with both major indices lower, leadership concentrated in a handful of gainers, and the largest point declines coming from consumer and technology names. The move was orderly, but it erased the early optimism and left the benchmarks below round-number levels that had acted as support in recent sessions.
